It has an estimated population of around 54,000 people and it lies approximately 8 miles west-northwest from Charing Cross. The name West Drayton may have come about because there was once a crossing over the River Crane on what is now called Green Lanes which would have been near where the present day market place stands (the old post office used to be next door). The parish church of All Saints dates back to Saxon times and features some interesting stained glass windows including one depicting St George slaying the dragon. There are also several other churches within close proximity such as Holy Trinity Church which was built in 1875 by Henry Holland who later became Bishop Of Liverpool; Christ Church founded by John Wesley himself; Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Chapel erected in 1840 following much fund raising efforts led mainly by local businessmen; and finally Emmanuel United Reformed Church opened its doors for worship in 1897 after many years fundraising work spearheaded principally by members of West Drayton Lodge No 10 A Freemason Fraternal Society. The population at the 2011 census was 11,711. It lies about 8 miles west of Charing Cross and just south-west of Uxbridge. The name West Drayton probably derives from two Old English words meaning "western farmstead". In medieval times it belonged to the manor or estate of Hoddesdon which lay within its boundaries; this may have been because there were several watermills on what are now known as Mill Green and High Street (the latter being part of an ancient Roman road). A church dedicated to St Lawrence was founded here by King Offa around 796 AD but disappeared before 1086 when it became annexed by Westminster Abbey through royal gift. However this etymology remains unproven. In 1870–72 George Stephenson built his first locomotive for use on railways in England at nearby Crewe Works using parts manufactured locally including iron castings from foundries such as those operated by John Blenkinsop & Co., later owners/managers [7]; he had earlier experimented with steam engines powered only by coal gas generated on site [8]. Today much industry has departed leaving behind some large office blocks but also many smaller businesses providing local employment – notably health care providers such as Barts Health NHS Trust who occupy premises formerly occupied respectively by British Railways Board Meeting Rooms No 1& 2 situated off Station Road next door to their railway station entrance where refreshments can be purchased etc.
