It has a population of around 25,000 people and lies on the River Dove about 10 miles east of Derby city centre. Historically it was an important crossing point on the Great North Road between London and Edinburgh. In medieval times there were two churches here - one dedicated to St Peter and another to All Saints - both now demolished. There are also remains of a motte-and-bailey castle which may have been built by William I in 1173 but this too is now gone. Today much of what can be seen including some old buildings dating back centuries remain although many newer developments have taken place over recent years making it somewhat difficult to trace its history accurately! However despite being relatively small compared with some towns elsewhere there is still plenty going on within its boundaries including; several large businesses involved in manufacturing/production along with various service industries catering for local needs such as restaurants etc..
